World’s Best Female Chef Shooting Star
At the Hiša Franko restaurant in Slovenia’s lake district, the kitchen is headed by a woman who has worked her way up from nowhere to win World’s Best Female Chef 2017. But there is no trace of haute cuisine in Ana Roš’s background. In fact, having studied in Trieste and learned five languages, she was destined to become a diplomat. But when her husband took over his parents’ hotel, Roš abandoned her first career choice and took over the kitchen at the Hiša Franko – despite the fact that, at the time, she didn’t know how to cook. Her second career was therefore by no means predictable.
Without ever having set foot in a cookery school, she set about acquiring the skills that every good chef needs. Through hard work, energy and talent she worked her way to the top. Her style is strictly regional. Foraged flowers, fungi and wild grasses feature heavily along with beef from local herds that graze on mountain pastures.
